Hometown Family – The Travis’

Tell us how you and your spouse met and how long you have been married.

We are celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary this September on September 8th. In many ways, it seems hard to believe it has been 20 years. We met through mutual friends.

Tell us about where each of you grew up and how you landed in Paducah.

We were both born in Paducah, KY. After being married for about a year, my husband later decided he wanted to pursue a career in chiropractics, so we moved to St. Louis, MO, for him to attend school, and I worked during this time too. We were there for a few years. After he graduated, we moved back to Paducah, KY, to be back with family and friends where we both were originally from.

What is your favorite holiday?

Melissa – Christmas

Michael – Christmas

What is your favorite thing about Paducah?

I love the close hometown feel and community, where pretty much “everyone knows everybody.”

How do you spend your summer breaks?

We enjoy traveling and vacationing with family and friends as well as having get-togethers at our house. We also spend lots of time at Kentucky Lake boating and tubing with family. We like to go to Gulf Shores, Alabama. We also stay busy in the summer going swimming, camps for the kids, VBS, school sports, etc.

What does your spouse do to make you feel special?

Melissa – He is always saying to me that we need to make time for each other just one on one since we are busy with the kids. So once a quarter, he typically books a hotel, and we take a little “getaway” out of town. We tend to go to Franklin, TN, and love that area. We always have a nice time there, and our families are always wonderful and help us with the kids.

Michael – I also love it when we watch tv programs together and schedule date nights out just the two of us.

How do you manage work and family time?

Melissa – There always has to be a balance, so I simply prioritize what “has” to be done for the day. Making memories is so important because you never get that time back with your children and family.

Michael – I plan/block off times to balance between work and personal. I generally have certain hours I work and hours I devote to personal or family time.

Does your family have a motto?

Make Today Better Than Yesterday.

What are the core values of your family?

Love, prayers, honesty, respect.

What brings you the greatest joy as a parent?

When the kids come and give me a hug out of the blue and just say “I love you” or “you’re the best mom,” it definitely makes me smile.

Tell us something interesting about your family that we may not know.

When we sit down to have dinner together as a family at night, after we say the blessing, we will go around the table, and each of us will say what was our “high and low” of the day.

Do you have nicknames for your kids?

Addison – Addapooh or Addaloo

Chaney – Chaney Bug

Carson – CarMan
