Feet Under My Table – Fall Matters

Thank goodness for Fall!

September ushers in a new season of changes. There’s simply a difference in the air!

So many things come to mind in September–Labor Day, kids back in school, football games, the flurry of school buses on the roads, sports, and bands in full swing.

But can I tell you?

Fall matters for so many reasons.

For many farmers, there’s a new harvest that happens in September.

Apples are ripening in orchards, like Coal Creek Orchard in Hopkinsville. You can find them on Facebook if you’d love to plan a visit. A great time will be happening during their Apple Festival on October 2nd.

I was amazed by their plan of activities, vendors, food trucks, and pastries, along with apple picking via their apple wagon.

They are known for their fried pies and apple fritters in that area. Who knew there were marvelous pastries and baked goods that can be found there during that apple festival? They are also famous for their apple cider and cider slushies.

Doesn’t that sound like a great way to spend a Saturday? Picking apples, eating great food, and activities for the kids? I’m in!

In August, we strolled through their orchard with the abundance of all different types of apples.  I was overwhelmed by their beauty and produce.

They also harvest honey in September, as many beekeepers in our area do.

After our visit with them, I realized that September and Fall really do matter for many reasons.

Not only for the fundraising in our local area with BBQ “Off the River,” or the bounty of apples in area orchards, or honey harvested— it’s a time in between.

We have loved summer that brought us the flowers, harvest, and a bounty of produce and outdoor activities.

After we have survived those hot and humid days of August, aren’t we all ready for change?

I’ve been busy harvesting zinnia and sunflower seeds to be planted in the spring.

I’m still adding to my freezer and the pantry with more jam and late produce; baking loaves of apple bread and zucchini bread to add to the freezer for weekend mornings that just need those things for breakfast or brunch.

Now I’m looking forward to adding applesauce, apple pie and cake to my list.

But fall matters for so many more reasons.

Fall gives us a transitionary time to prepare for the winter months.

It provides an opportunity for the land to rest before cold weather sets in.

The season of Fall offers a time to calm down from the summer months

Sweater weather; flannel weather; hoodie weather; and s’mores are in the forecast.

Great sunsets and the smell of firepits and wiener roasts are settling in.

Take in the beauty of the fall foliage that’s coming soon.

Let the changes of transition begin in your heart, too, friend – when the season of fall will bring respite and tranquility.

May you enjoy the goodness of those apples or honey or smores with opportunities to spend time in new ways with family and friends.

The beginning of a season of thankfulness and gratefulness begins in September, friends.

I am truly thankful for the season of Fall and the many reasons that Fall matters. How about you?
